Thousands marched from Malcolm X Park to the White House in D.C., protesting President Trump’s federal intervention.
WASHINGTON — A large demonstration in D.C. Saturday once again forced road closures.
Thousands of protesters gathered at Malcolm X Park late in the morning and marched to the White House.
The “We Are All D.C.” protest – reportedly put together by Home Rule and the American Civil Liberties Union – was “perhaps the most organized demonstration yet” against President Donald Trump’s federal intervention in the nation’s capital.
The federal intervention began almost a month ago and it immediately sparked demonstrations in D.C.
According to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office, violent crime has dropped 45 percent since this time last year. The District saw an even more substantial decrease in carjackings, with 87 percent drop compared to last year.
Nevertheless, while Trump and his allies on Capitol Hill have applauded the surge, which includes Federal agents and National Guard units alongside Metropolitan police, the presence has put residents and local leaders on edge.
Free DC released a statement regarding the call to march:
Armed National Guard soldiers are carrying guns through our neighborhoods. ICE and FBI agents are profiling, harassing, and violently arresting our neighbors. MPD is going after children just for being outside, and every hour that goes by is an hour when people here are in danger.
Trump has suggested he will consider launching similar law enforcement campaigns in Chicago, New Orleans, and elsewhere.
Some critics have noted that some of the GOP-led states sending National Guard units to the nation’s capital have higher crime rates in their own urban centers.
