CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – August saw a mix of hot and cooler weather in western Massachusetts, with temperatures ultimately ending below average for the month.
Despite experiencing the fifth heat wave of the summer with temperatures reaching into the 90s, the latter part of August brought cooler conditions, resulting in an average temperature that was 0.5 degrees below normal across the U.S.
According to Climate Central and NOAA, the eastern half of the country experienced below average temperatures during August 2025, contributing to the overall cooler trend.
In Springfield, the average temperature has risen by 1.7 degrees since 1970, indicating a long-term warming trend despite the recent cooler months. While the month ended cooler, warmer temperatures are expected to return at the start of the weekend before cooling down again next week.
The cooler-than-average temperatures in August provided a brief respite in a generally warming trend, with local forecasts predicting fluctuating temperatures in the coming days.
