Cold case: Calaveras County deputies seek information on 1984 missing person case

(FOX40.COM) — The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is searching for answers to a 1984 cold case of a 30-year-old man who went missing.

CCSO said Jeffery Askren went missing on May 1, 1984, after not arriving at work in Santa Clara. His vehicle was later discovered on Winton Road, east of West Point in Calaveras County.

It has been over 41 years since Atkins went missing, and he would be 72 years old today.

At the time of his disappearance, Askren was 5 feet 9 inches, 150 pounds with red hair and blue eyes.

Early investigation revealed:

  • Snow was on the ground, but no footprints were found
  • A camera lens cover was discovered near the vehicle
  • A tripod was recovered inside the vehicle
  • Askren was known to carry camera equipment
  • No additional items or signs of him were found
