ALTAMONT, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Capital District Scottish Games is taking over the Altamont Fairgrounds on August 30. Families can partake in watching music and athletic competitions, learn more about Scottish culture, and indulge in Scottish beer and handmade goods.
The opening parade and ceremony begin at 11:30 a.m. near the grandstand, but the gates open at 8 a.m. for the piping and drumming, Highland dance, and other activities. Tickets are $25 at the gate and can be bought in advance through the Capital District Scottish Games website.

- Athletic hammer throw starts at 11 a.m.
- Parade of Tartans and the opening ceremonies start at 11:30 a.m. at the Grandstand.
- Opening Mass Bands at noon in the Grandstand.
- Highland Fun Zone, pony rides, and the petting zoo, and Children’s Areas & Animal Exhibitions open at 12:30 p.m.
- “Wildlife Alive” Birds of Prey/Falconry Show and An Clár School of Irish Dance at 12:45 p.m.
- Cecilla performs at the Main Beer Tent, the Highland Pre-Premiere Contest, and the pipe band contest begins at 1 p.m.
- Athletics caber throw at 1:15 p.m.
- Meet the Scottish dog breeds, and Friends Union performs at the Main Beer Tent at 1:30 p.m.
- Scottish Kids Zone and Rince go Brach Irish Dance Academy performs in the Main Beer Tent at 2 p.m.
- Heron Valley performs in the Main Beer Tent at 2:15 p.m.
- Stewart’s Glen performs in the Pole Barn at 2:45 p.m.
- Bonniest Knees Contest starts in the Main Beer Tent, and “Wildlife Alive” Birds of Prey/Falconry Show starts at 3:30 p.m.
- The Pipe Band competition resumes at 4 p.m.
- Heron Valley performs in the Main Beer Tent, and Cecilla performs in the Pole Barn at 4:15 p.m.
- Closing ceremonies begin, and Mass Bands perform in the Main Beer Tent at 6 p.m.
Another staple of the festival is a Scottish dog breed show that showcases 14 breeds. There’s also a vendor tent that features Scottish-made items, including clothing, jewelry, food, and more.
