A man jumped off the Thomas Rhodes Bridge and into the Cape Fear River early Sunday morning in an attempt to avoid arrest, WECT reports.
He survived the nearly 60-foot drop and only had minor injuries, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, saying the chase started when the man drove the wrong way on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and hit another car around 2 a.m.
Officials said the man got out of his car and started running. Deputies found him on the Thomas Rhodes Bridge and were going to arrest him when he jumped off.
The Wilmington Fire Department used a boat in the Cape Fear River to search for him. When they found him on an island, deputies and officers on the boat were able to arrest him.
The man was taken to the hospital but released shortly after. He was then taken to the New Hanover County Detention Center.
