Holidays, furloughs to affect waste pick up in Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver residents will have to prepare to take on a little bit more compost than usual this week, as a holiday and furlough will affect the shifts of Denver’s Solid Waste Management Division employees, according to a press release from the city of Denver.

The city also announced schedule changes for dates in the near future.

Week of Aug. 25

Solid Waste Management will not collect compost for the week starting on Aug. 25, as employees will only work a 32-hour week and take a furlough on Friday.

All collections, compost included, will resume the week starting on Sept. 1, on a one-day delay in observance of Labor Day on Monday of that week, the city said.

Week of Nov. 24

Starting in the week of Nov. 24, employees will not be collecting compost or recycling while Waste Management staff observe Thanksgiving on Nov. 27, and a city-wide furlough on Nov. 28.

On Nov. 24, the city asks all customers to set their garbage out by 6 a.m., so DOTI can collect it over the three-day workweek. Scheduled large-item pickups are also required to set the item out by 6 a.m. on that day so it can be picked up between then and Wednesday.

After Thanksgiving, on Dec. 1, compost collection will resume, and Solid Waste Management will reset the recycling collection schedule, which includes:

  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling Thanksgiving week (week of November 24) should set their carts out the week of December 1 instead, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.
  • Customers currently scheduled to set out their recycling the week of December 1 should set out their recycling the week of December 8, and then every other week after that for the remainder of the year.

The city of Denver also said that, effective immediately, all collections will begin at 6 a.m., rather than the typical 7 a.m. collection time.
