Clackamas dentistry caused brain damage to 4-year-old child, suit says

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A family is suing a Clackamas County dentist and practice after a routine visit left their four-year-old child nearly dead and suffering brain damage.

The recently filed lawsuit says a July 2024 visit to Sunnyside Dentistry for children went horribly wrong after what was supposed to be a routine dental procedure to address some cavities. The dentist allegedly urged that the child, identified as M.I., be placed under general anesthesia, despite their age and the parents’ reservations. However, the end result was that the child went into full cardiac arrest and needed to be rushed to Randall Children’s Hospital Emergency Room, the suit says.

Following the visit, the child spent weeks being treated for brain swelling, was put on a feeding tube and ultimately lost basic motor functions they had before the visit, the suit says.

The family is now accusing two providers of medical negligence and seeking $22 million in damages for past and future medical costs.

The suit says M.L.’s heart stopped shortly after being administered the anesthesia, and they died in the dental chair. The child then had to be revived through life-saving CPR and epinephrine injections. The suit alleges the dental providers failed to monitor the child’s vital signs that would have prevented the cardiac arrest.

As a result of oxygen being cut off from the brain, the child now suffers brain damage, the suit says. Before the incident, the child could sound out words, write and dress themselves and use the bathroom without assistance. Now, the child has regressed back to an infant state, having to relearn how to walk, talk, hold their head up, grasp objects, use their arms and legs and even needing diapers again after previously being potty trained long before the procedure, the suit says.
