Happy 80th Birthday to Charles Wellesley, 9th Duke of Wellington! The Peer and Politician is the Duke of Wellington in Britain, Prince of Waterloo in The Netherlands and Belgium, Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain, and Duke of Victoria in Portugal.
The elder son of the 8th Duke of Wellington and Diana McConnel, he grew up in London and at Stratfield Saye House and was educated at Ludgrove School, Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1977, the Marquess of Douro married Princess Antonia of Prussia, daughter of Prince Frederick of Prussia and Lady Brigid Guinness, at St Pauls Church in Knightsbridge. The couple have five children, among them the Earl of Mornington and Lady Charlotte Santo-Domingo.
The Conservative MEP for Surrey from 1979 to 1984, and Conservative MEP for Surrey West from 1984 to 1989, the Duke was elected to a seat in the House of Lords as a Conservative in 2015, but quit the Conservative Party in 2019 and sat as a “non-affiliated” member of the House of Lords from 2019 to 2020, and since has sat as a crossbench peer.
The Marquess succeeded as the 9th Duke of Wellington in 2015, also becoming the the Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain, the Prince of Waterloo in Belgium and The Netherlands, and the Duke of Victoria in Portugal. The Duke resides at the family seat of Stratfield Saye House in Hampshire, and also retains an apartment at Apsley House in London, in addition to the La Torre estate in Granada.
One of his first duties as Duke was the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo in 2015, attending commemorations in Belgium before a Banquet at Apsley House in London, as well as a Dinner at the Egmont Palace in Brussels and a Service at St Paul’s Cathedral.
A close friend of the King and Queen, Duke carried Queen Mary’s Crown in the procession at the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023 and has been invited in the King’s procession at Royal Ascot. We wish His Grace a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!
