Gas station canopy collapses onto vehicles in Crystal Lake: police

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. — A police investigation is underway after the canopy of a gas station collapsed in Crystal Lake.

The incident happened around 8:40 p.m. Thursday at the Shell Gas station in the 200 block of Virginia Street.

Upon arrival, police discovered the canopy covering the gas pumps had fallen and struck two vehicles. Police said one vehicle was occupied at the time of the incident, but no injuries were reported.

Both vehicles sustained damage.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that the canopy was not struck by anything prior to the collapse. Initial indicators are that weather may have been a contributing factor.
