'We have all the services': Mobile center brings voter support to rural Yolo County

The Yolo County Elections Office is using its Mobile Voting Center to reach people in rural communities who may not have easy access to voting services.

The Mobile Voting Center is a 29-foot trailer staffed by a team that helps people register to vote, cast a ballot, get a replacement vote-by-mail ballot, and use an accessible ballot-marking device.

The unit is traveling to seven locations throughout Yolo County. FOX40.com caught up with it at the U.S. Postal Office in Yolo, a community of about 300 people northwest of Woodland.

Historically, rural communities have lacked the resources and infrastructure of more established towns and cities, which impacts voting access in those communities.

This is why the Yolo County Elections Office said the mobile center is pivotal.

“We really wanted to get the townships that are more of the rural area that would be left out if we did not bring these services to them and at their doorstep,” said Jesse Salinas with the county’s elections office.

“We have all the services you would need, including any translation services; we do have services, for example, in Spanish,” Salinas said.

Voters using the center mentioned that if it was not for its visit, they had no plan as to where they were going to cast their votes.

“I’ve had it in the back of my mind that I was going to vote, but I did not know how to do it since I had never voted before. When I saw this, I said, ‘Bam! it’s your time to vote,'” said Kimberly Avidales.

“It’s very convenient since there are a lot of people who do not drive here. So they can walk here, and that is very important,” Avidales said.

The unit will travel to different locations across Yolo County up until Election Day. Tap here to see the full schedule.
