Hornets get in on Karl-Anthony Towns trade – At The Hive

[ad_1]

Charlotte Hornets general manager Jeff Peterson has continued his MO of getting in on seemingly every trade. He’s been selling off cap space and exceptions to collect draft compensation from other teams that need help moving salary around. The latest example of that is the Karl-Anthony Towns trade in which the Hornets were reported to be involved out of the blue.

The full details of the trade are as follows:

  • The Knicks get Karl-Anthony Towns from the Timberwolves
  • The Timberwolves get Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first round pick from the Knicks
  • The Hornets get DaQuan Jeffries from the Knicks along with draft compensation

I haven’t seen the final details of the trade to see how it all shakes out. I think the Hornets will be using part of an exception (perhaps the midlevel) to absorb Jeffries’ salary. They’ll likely waive him before the end of camp, if not sooner.

There’s also no word on what the exact draft compensation is, but given the lack of details around it, it’s probably not much. The Hornets have largely received some second round picks to help teams out with the salary matching part of trades. That’s probably what they’re getting here. They’ll get a second round pick or two, and they probably won’t be until a few years from now.

It ain’t much, but it’s honest work. Jeff Peterson is clearly all in on getting as much draft capital as he can, and he’s making a habit of preying on teams in need of assistance to get a target. Lakers Lead put it best on Twitter.
