CHICAGO — If you are looking for extra cash, you may want to look at unwanted weapons in your home.

Chicago police will give out gift cards for each unwanted gun turned over to the department as part of a turn-in event Saturday at St. Sabina Church on the city’s South Side. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 28, and organizers say the location—set to host its third turn—in event—has proven successful.

“What we are trying to do is give people a safe way to get rid of that gun,” said Glen Brooks, the city’s director of policing.

Brooks added that a $100 gift card is awarded for each gun turned in. Attendees can also receive a $10 gift card for each BB, air, or replica gun turned over to officers.

“Gun turn-ins have proven to be very successful, and more importantly, it helps increase the safety of our neighborhoods,” Brooks said.

On top of the gift cards, organizers want people to know there will be ‘no questions asked’ by CPD officers at the event.

Brooks stressed the importance of getting rid of unwanted weapons in the home.

“It lessens the chance that the gun will be stolen and used in another crime,” he said. “It lessens the chance that a gun will be used in a tragic suicide. Overall, we always need to find ways to safely dispose of weapons.”
