Urban Search and Rescue Teams in the Triangle deploying to western NC ahead of Hurricane Helene

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As crews around the state prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Helene, the Search and Rescue team in Raleigh and Fayetteville have deployed some of their units Thursday morning to assist the crews in Western N.C.

The Urban Search and Rescue team in the Triangle, N.C. Task Force 8, has deployed 30 members to Waynesville. 14 are from Raleigh fire, 10 are coming from Durham, 3 from Chapel Hill and 3 from Wake County EMS.

Fayetteville Fire Department also announced they have deployed with N.C. Task Force 9 to join N.C. Task Force 6 (Greensboro Fire Department) in Brevard. Included in N.C. Task Force 9 are members of the Fayetteville Fire Department, Fayetteville Police Department and Cape Fear Valley EMS.

Rocky Mount line workers left Wednesday to provide mutual aid, sending 11 members to Tallahassee, Florida.

The deployment comes after Gov. Cooper declared a State of Emergency for North Carolina as Hurricane Helene strengthened into a Category 2 before landing Thursday night in the Florida Gulf Coast.
