Humid and breezy with a few showers for Sunday football

[ad_1]

Rain chances will increase Monday afternoon through early Tuesday due to low pressure near the coast.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Sunday

Mostly cloudy skies early should give way to some afternoon sunshine. Expect afternoon temperatures to top out near 80 degrees. A slight chance for a few showers are possible and wind gusts near 25 mph.

Stronger winds, more clouds, and rain along the coast due to a developing system offshore. The system will have an impact along the coast with increasing wave heights, beach erosion, and rip current risk.

This Week

Unsettled weather will ramp up Monday and Tuesday due to the low near the coast beginning to move inland. Since the low hasn’t formed into a depression or storm, there is still a decent amount of uncertainty. But what we do know is residents should prepare for more rain starting midday Monday through Tuesday.

Rain

On Monday, expect a cloudy start to the day with rain moving into Charlotte after lunchtime, which means areas east of I-77 will see the rain first. It’ll be heaviest overnight into early Tuesday and slowly move out throughout the day. By Wednesday, the low is north of us and the counter-clockwise rotation should mix in slightly drier air, lowering rain chances through the end of the week.

How much rain? If you live east of I-77, prepare for one to two inches at a maximum. If you live west of I-77, it’ll be one inch or less.

Wind

Wind gusts already topped near 25 mph on Saturday and we’ll see a similar trend through Sunday afternoon. Monday morning will experience gusts 20 – 25 mph with winds flirting with 30 mph in Charlotte by the evening. Overnight, winds will hover near 30 mph before dropping quickly throughout the day Tuesday.

If the wind is near 30 mph in Charlotte, this means areas east of I-77 could see gusts near 35 mph. West of I-77, wind gusts will be a little lower between 20 – 25 mph.

Tropical Update

The low mentioned above is still being monitored by the National Hurricane Center for possible tropical formation. It won’t change our local impacts, even if it does develop into a depression or storm.

However, that is looking less likely as of the latest updates. It has a 50/50 shot over the next two to seven days. But by then… it will have already moved inland.

Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Gordon formed Friday way out in the central Atlantic. It is still far away from impacting land of any kind but our team will monitor closely.
