(FOX40.COM) — Modesto leaders and officials from the United Soccer League announced earlier this week the start of negotiations to potentially bring pro soccer teams and a stadium to the region.
The two entities agreed to a one-year window to exclusively talk with each other about the potential for pro soccer to come to the area, including discussions on funding and the location of a stadium, as well as an entertainment district.
“We are incredibly excited about the potential opportunity to bring both USL men’s and
women’s teams to Modesto,” reads part of a statement from Justin Papadakis, deputy CEO of the USL.
Mayor Sue Zwahlen’s statement reads, in part, “Whether you’re a soccer fan, an athlete, a sports spectator, or someone looking for a local event to take your family to, we’re excited for this opportunity to score a goal with the USL and give residents something to cheer for too.”
The city said its large population along Highway 99 provides for more economic development, with other cities within a 30-minute drive providing a larger audience for sports and entertainment.
The USL started in 1986 and today includes 44 professional clubs, including the Central Valley’s only USL Championship team, Sacramento Republic FC.
Fresno FC played for two years out of the largest city in the state’s interior, but the owners’ inability to secure a location for a permanent stadium led them to relocate the team to the coast, where it became Monterey Bay FC.
