CHARLOTTE, NC — It’s the first week of college at UNC Charlotte. A time for excitement and anxiety as our youth gets ready to further their education.
Class may be at the top of mind for students, but while on campus, some say they are also thinking about their safety.
“It’s definitely kind of scary just to know that, you know, anyone could have any weapon on campus,” said UNC Charlotte freshman Mutale Isaac.
Last spring semester, 3 guns were found on the UNC Charlotte campus in a two week span. About a month earlier, there was a false active shooter threat at the College of Education building. Of course, the 2019 UNC Charlotte campus shooting, that killed two students, still weighs heavy on so many hearts.
UNC Charlotte students we talked to say they would like to see more mandates put in place for campus safety like more metal detectors.
Other students admit, the topic isn’t at the top of mind for many their age when it comes to swaying their vote this November.
“I’d say right now, probably not, because I feel like we’re kind of desensitized to it. It’s been on the news for a while, so it’s like, oh, another school,” said student Helina Hilu of the topic of campus safety.
