'Me before we': Christian Brothers girls flag football determined to run it back

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – One year ago, girls flag football was officially recognized as a sanctioned sport in California, allowing girls everywhere to compete on the field.

The Christian Brothers flag football team launched its inaugural season with a championship banner, celebrating its head coach, Raymond Bradley, who was named Coach of the Year.

“The greatest reward as a coach is witnessing the kids accomplish what you’ve taught them,” Bradley stated. “I truly enjoy watching them learn and understand the game. That’s what matters most to me.”

Senior slot receiver Aleyah Harmon, entering her second season with the Falcons, credits the team’s success to Bradley’s positivity and commitment to the sport.

“Our team motto is, ‘we before me.’ Every day before practice he asks us, ‘what’s one good thing that happened today?’ Because there’s always something good that’s happened,” said Harmon. “I think he thinks differently than most coaches. He’s not just thinking like basic plays. He’s thinking about all the trick plays that can happen. He’s trying to keep everybody on their toes and makes sure nobody knows our next move.”

Girls flag football has emerged as an exciting and empowering sport. It not only enhances physical fitness, but also encourages teamwork.

“Being with all my teammates, if we make a mistake, they lift you up,” said junior center Marisela Gaeta. “There’s no negative energy on this team.”

With a new season approaching, the Falcons are determined to maintain their momentum.

“I know a lot of teams are already talking about us,” Gaeta added. “And coming for us. But I’d say, ‘bring it!’ Because we’re ready.”

Adds Bradley, “five years from now, I hope the program continues to thrive. I want to see the girls earning scholarships that allow them to pursue college while doing what they love, playing and expanding their education.”

Christian Brothers kicks off its preseason against the McClatchy Lions on Wednesday, August 20th.
