Residents in condemned Aurora apartment building face final hours

[ad_1]

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — The clock is ticking for residents living in one condemned Aurora apartment building.

The city of Aurora has notified residents of the Nome Street building that they must vacate by 7 a.m. Tuesday. Signs posted on doors read: “Order to vacate. Unsafe to occupy.”

On Monday, residents were spotted removing items from units and placing them into vehicles. Garbage in an overflowing dumpster continued to grow in the parking lot.

On Monday afternoon, the city reassured residents about plans to provide hotel vouchers while looking for another place and deposit assistance on new places to live.

The city claims the property management has done little to help residents, while in a previous email to FOX31, the same property management claims Venezuelan gang influence has made the building a dangerous place to live.

The city said code violations for the building go back at least two years, and the property management has failed to bring the building back up to code.

Ethel and her husband were almost finished moving all their belongings on Monday afternoon. She said because she and her husband never signed a rental contract, she’s now worried they will not be eligible for city assistance.

She said they always paid cash for rent.

“We don’t even know what we’re gonna do. It’s upsetting. Sad,” Ethel said.

The city said they have been going door to door in an attempt to help residents who do not have the proper paperwork.
