These people can still claim their 2024 TABOR refund

DENVER (KDVR) — For some taxpayers, the Colorado tax refund that gives back hundreds of dollars can still be claimed.

When the state takes in tax revenue beyond the limit, Coloradans who file taxes can expect a refund check in the mail known as the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, or TABOR. This year, it resulted in a refund of $800 to taxpaying Coloradans who have lived in the state for over a year.

However, many people didn’t claim it.

Toward the end of the 2024 tax season, many Coloradans still hadn’t claimed their refund. There was $3.28 billion available in TABOR sales tax refunds, according to Derek Kuhn with the Colorado Department of Revenue, but by the end of March, $1.76 billion worth of TABOR refunds had been issued, which is about 54% of the total refund.

These people can still file for TABOR refunds

According to the Department of Revenue, Coloradans are still eligible to claim a TABOR refund by Oct. 15 if they:

• Have a Colorado income tax liability (i.e. Owe Colorado income taxes)
• Claim a refund of wage withholding
• Are required to file a Colorado return because they are required to file a federal return

After October, the next time taxpayers can file for TABOR refunds is during the next tax season. The quicker you file your taxes, the quicker you’ll get a refund.

Oftentimes, tax systems like Turbo Tax claim the refund for you, however, this isn’t always the case. Make sure section 34 of your Colorado individual income tax return is filled out.
