RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As military branches across the country struggle to get people to enlist, some local offices are seeing a new trend in who is enlisting.
“Our trends are going up for the minority group, so we are seeing an increase there,” Captain Shameka Boakye-Boaten with the North Carolina National Guard said. “Women in our armed forces, as well as the Hispanic population and African American.”
Recruitment officers say they likely won’t hit their recruitment goals this year, but numbers are higher right now than they were this time last year. They say benefits like health insurance and training really attract people, but they’re finding that even more so than that, people are joining to be part of a family.
“I found that my fellow soldiers, my peers, are very supportive, a lot of them, they know my children by name, we go to each other’s birthday parties on the weekends, and we’re just an all around big family, and that, I can appreciate,” Captain Boakye-Boaten said.
She says military jobs are inclusive and people are seeing more and more opportunity across the branches.
“We do offer IT jobs, communications, we offer logistics jobs, they translate well in the civilian population,” she said.
Recruiters are also focusing on information events across the area in the coming months, they’re encouraging anyone interested to get in touch.
