Lake Tahoe beach reopens as water quality normalizes following sewage spill

(FOX40.COM) — The last of two beaches affected by a large sewage spill in North Lake Tahoe has reopened with the lifting of a health advisory by Placer County Environmental Health on Wednesday, according to the North Tahoe Public Utility District.

Carnelian West Beach has been closed since July 19 after some 85,000 gallons of raw sewage flowed into Lake Tahoe from a nearby main sewage line break along North Lake Boulevard.

After continued testing of bacteria levels in the waters surrounding the beach, county health found that water quality tests are back to normal range and within California standards.

The shoreline and the beach reopened to the public at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and landscaping repairs will continue through Aug. 6.

The spill occurred when a contractor working in the Carnelian Bay area hit a main sewer line causing road closures for 12 hours and allowing 125,000 gallons of sewage to escape.
