BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP)–Governor Healey signed the FutureTech act into law on Monday afternoon, which looks to modernize and improve IT systems across state government offices.
This $1.23-billion technology upgrade looks to streamline and simplify government websites to allow citizens to access services and information more easily.
It also aims to improve government technology cybersecurity. and harness AI and other emerging technology to make government more effective and efficient.
“This is about Massachusetts, this is about who we are, this is about really important investments, in technology, in innovation,” said Governor Healey in the bill signing ceremony. “[These investments] are going to help best position us to do what we need to do to improve life, to improve our economy, to make sure that Massachusetts is the best place to work, to live, and raise a family.”
This act also allows for two grant programs to continue, both of which help cities and towns to expand broadband access.
“This bill in particular invests in our very popular community compact IT program…a lot of regional opportunities there as we think about improving the IT services at the local level,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll at the ceremony. “That’s also going to save taxpayers’ money locally.”
The Governor and her office say that access to internet improves access to many necessities, including healthcare, housing, and education, and will allow citizens to utilize more government resources.
The FutureTech Act aims to keep Massachusetts, the birthplace of the computer, a leader in new technology.
