STUDY: Best swimwear colors for visibility in bodies of water

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Hadley Police have shared tips on their social media to ensure visibility in bodies of water this summer, a crucial precaution to prevent drowning incidents.

ALIVE Solutions, a company dedicated to aquatic safety, has conducted extensive testing to determine the most visible swimwear colors in different aquatic environments.

The research highlights that not all swimwear colors are equally visible in the water, making it challenging to spot individuals, particularly in emergency situations. This difficulty is amplified in drowning scenarios, where every second counts. By choosing swimwear in highly visible colors, swimmers can significantly increase their chances of being seen and rescued promptly.

The study examined various colors under different water conditions to identify which ones stand out the most. Bright and contrasting colors, such as neon orange and bright yellow, were found to be the most visible in all types of water. These colors provide a stark contrast against the natural blue and green hues of pools, lakes, and oceans, making it easier for lifeguards and other swimmers to spot individuals from a distance.

In contrast, colors like white, light blue, and light green blended into the water, making them less effective for visibility. Dark colors, such as black and navy, also proved challenging to see, especially in deeper or murky waters.

ALIVE Solutions emphasizes that while choosing the right swimwear color is an important step, it should be part of a broader approach to water safety. Other measures include constant supervision, learning to swim, and understanding the risks associated with different water environments.
