West Nile Virus mosquitoes found in San Jose, unincorporated Santa Clara County

(KRON) — West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been confirmed in parts of San Jose and unincorporated Santa Clara County, according to the Santa Clara Vector Control District. Impacted zip codes in affected areas include:

  • 95111
  • 95112
  • 95121
  • 95122

Impacted areas are scheduled to be treated by truck-mounted equipment on Monday, July 29, weather permitting. Treatment to reduce the adult mosquito population in the area is set to begin around 10 p.m. and conclude two to four hours later.

Monday’s treatment will mark the second West Nile virus treatment in the county this year.

The district’s mosquito-management process is focused on preventing mosquitos from reaching the adult stage by “proactively targeting immature stages of mosquitoes found in standing water,” officials said.

The district aims to conduct the control treatments as quickly as possible when West Nile-positive mosquitos are discovered. “Any delay would present an imminent threat to public health and safety, exposing to public to potential vector-borne illness or even death,” officials said.

By reducing the mosquito population in impacted areas, the risk of human infection is decreased. Adult mosquitos are the primary carriers of vector-borne viruses that can cause illnesses in people. Since mosquitos thrive in warmer weather, it’s common to see an increase in West Nile virus during the summer and fall, the district said.

Residents in impacted areas will be notified of the mosquito management operation through postcards, AlertSCC, and emails to registered voters in certain precincts.
