The Secret Service said the suspect was “neutralized” by agents after an apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
WASHINGTON — Law enforcement officials say Saturday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s campaign rally is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the ex-president and the suspect is dead.
Here’s what we know about what happened.
Who was the shooter?
As of midnight Eastern, authorities have yet to release the identity of the suspected gunman in the shooting at Trump’s rally.
The FBI said in a late night press conference they won’t be publicly identifying the gunman until they’re 100% sure, but are “close” to being able to release that.
Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press the assailant who opened fire at the rally was a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania.
The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement the shooter fired from “an elevated position outside the rally venue.” Agents “neutralized” the shooter, who is now dead.
Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle at the scene, a source told the Associated Press.
One spectator was killed and two spectators were critically injured, the agency said. Officials confirmed late Saturday that all three victims were adult males.
What happened to Donald Trump?
After gunshots rang through the crowd, Trump could be seen reaching with his right hand up to his ear.
Trump appeared to lower himself behind the lectern and the sounds — apparent gunshots — continued as Secret Service agents rushed the stage.
Agents eventually stood up, surrounding Trump.
As they moved with him off the stage, Trump lifted his right arm and fist into the air. Blood was seen on the right side of his face.
Trump’s campaign quickly issued a statement saying the former president is “fine” and was being checked out at a local medical facility.
The former president later said in a post on Truth Social that he was “shot with a bullet” in the upper part of his ear.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
