CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WNCT/WNCN) — North Topsail Beach officials said that a body was found Sunday morning along the shore of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
Multiple emergency and law enforcement agencies responded after the discovery at the military base around 9:45 a.m., according to a news release from the town of North Topsail Beach.
The body was found as the North Topsail Beach Police and Fire Department, Camp Lejeune and Marine Fisheries continued their search into day four for a missing teenager from Goldsboro.
Identification of the body found Sunday has not been confirmed. But officials notified “the family” of the discovery, according to the news release.
Crews have been intensely searching for a 14-year-old Goldsboro boy who vanished at North Topsail Beach near New River Inlet on July 4.
Camp Lejeune is located northeast of North Topsail Beach and includes shorelines along the New River and the Atlantic Ocean.
The missing boy and his brother waded into the water, about 50 yards from shore, early Thursday afternoon. The brother was rescued by a passing boater, but the teen remained missing.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” the North Topsail Beach news release said.
The search resumed Friday morning and continued on Friday, according to North Topsail Beach Town Manager Alice Derian. Crews also searched on Saturday and a drone and helicopter were used during several days of searches.
Derian said the entire New River Inlet was searched, including surrounding ocean waters. The North Topsail Beach Police Department also continued with checks throughout Thursday night.
North Topsail Beach officials said a total of four water rescue calls occurred along the 12-mile stretch of the beach on Thursday.
