There could be thunderstorms on Friday afternoon lasting through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
SEATTLE — This weekend could bring chances of thunderstorms to the western Washington area, beginning Friday and lasting through Sunday.
KING 5 Chief Meteorologist Mike Everett said Saturday afternoon into the evening is the time of most concern for the central Puget Sound area. There is up to a 35% chance of thunderstorms between 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.
This happens when cold air coming in off the Gulf of Alaska arrives closer to the coast on Friday, bringing with it clouds and rain. When the cold air mixes with warmer air over land, it creates a convergence zone.
According to the National Weather Service Seattle, Friday could also see lightning and wind in the mountains and along the Pacific Coast. The Weather Risk Outlook also shows chances of lightning for all areas of western Washington on Saturday, with less potential on Sunday.
Storms could bring lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds and possible hail to the region, and especially to King and Snohomish counties, Meteorologist Everett said.
Temperatures on Friday will be in the upper 60s while Saturday sits at or just below 60 degrees, according to the NWS.
By Sunday, Father’s Day, chances of rain showers and possible thunderstorms remain into the afternoon.
Outdoor events, such as graduation ceremonies or outdoor recreation activities, may be impacted by this weekend’s storms.
