Family looking for answers nearly a year after Lady Lake murder

The mother of a 20-year-old killed in Lady Lake in 2023 is speaking out. Bryson Leverette and another person were leaving a home when police say they were “accosted” by three to four armed people. Both Leverette and the person he was with were shot. Leverette didn’t survive.June marks a year since Jill Leverette lost her son Bryson. “His school principal told me I know three things about Bryson, he will admit when he’s wrong, he loves his mama, and he’s one of the most respectful kids he’s ever met,” Leverette said. The 20-year-old had gone to Eustis High. He loved music and was close with his sister. And just before he died, he found out he and his girlfriend were expecting a son. “That was taken from him,” Leverette said. “Something that he wanted. She never expected to raise a kid this way. It’s not fair at all,”Five months to the day that Bryson was killed, Bryson Junior was born. “I have so much anger that you took my kid like you took somebody that he had a purpose in life. Clearly, this person did not, but my kid did, and you took that from him, us, and his baby. I’m still so very angry,” Leverette said. Nearly a year since Bryson was shot and killed, an experienced detective new to the Lady Lake Department has taken over the case. “The case did sit dormant for several months,” said Det. Jim Dunagan, now the lead detective on the case. “Going through that, compiling it in a way that makes sense to me, making contact with the family and reinitiating interviews with some of the key players in it is really the order of the day right now,”Dunagan says he’s confident it can be solved. “Someone knows what happened that night,” he said. “Someone knows who did it. Someone knows why,”Leverette has a message for those people who do. — come forward. “Imagine if this was your family member. Imagine if this was, you know, your brother or your son.
