UW encampment: Proud of students, staff and faculty

Re: “Protesters clear UW encampment by deadline” [May 21, A1]:

Thank you for covering the Gaza encampment at the University of Washington. I’m sorry to see it close, but we all knew it would not be forever.

As I walked through the well-organized, welcoming tents and clean byways, I felt so proud of the students, staff and faculty who collectively made this happen.

They did not directly stop the suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, but they have kept the Israeli atrocities in our consciousness and revealed the university’s and Boeing’s callous disregard of participating in genocide.

They also have shown it’s possible to build a community of abundance where everyone was welcomed, fed, sheltered and respected. Muslims, Jews, Christians and atheists lived in harmony and showed the possible future of Palestine as a secular, socialist inclusive state.

The organizing for an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people will continue until they are free.
