It felt like the latest example of a recurring theme during this 2024 NASCAR season: Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson, deciding last week’s race on the track among themselves. And now here they are again, the top two drivers in odds for Sunday’s event at Kansas Speedway.
Hamlin prevailed last weekend in Dover, Del., earning his third victory on the season to tie William Byron atop the win column. And the Joe Gibbs Racing stalwart is clearly eyeing more, given that his four career victories lead all active drivers at Kansas. Hamlin has been second, first and second in his past three starts on the Sunflower State track, leading a combined 97 laps in his past two starts on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.
Larson opened as the +380 odds favorite at Kansas, where he owns a victory and two runner-ups over his past five starts. Of course, Larson was also the odds favorite last weekend on the Monster Mile, where Hamlin led 136 laps and held off his rival from Hendrick Motorsports at the end. It’s a one-on-one showdown that could very well keep repeating itself all the way to the NASCAR championship race in November.

NASCAR Kansas Betting Tips
Hamlin-Affiliated Cars Won Three Straight at Kansas
Hamlin may own four career victories in Kansas City, but his influence at the track goes well beyond that. The most recent race at Kansas, last fall, was won by Tyler Reddick—who drives for the 23XI Racing outfit co-owned by Hamlin and Michael Jordan. Hamlin won the 2023 spring race (edging Larson, of course). And the 2022 fall event was won by the other 23IX driver, Bubba Wallace. That means cars owned or driven by Hamlin have won three straight at Kansas, and Hamlin finished second both times he didn’t win himself. Go back to Hamlin’s back-to-back wins at Kansas in 2019 and 2020, and he or his cars have won five of the last nine. You might have to go back to Phog Allen to find a guy with more Kansas know-how than Hamlin possesses right now.
Be Wary of Joey Logano’s Kansas Stats
Cars fielded by Penske Racing have won the last two championships on NASCAR’s top series, and we keep waiting on two-time titlist Logano to turn it around—but so far, that hasn’t happened. Dover marked Logano’s third straight double-digit result, and his average finish this season is a distant 17.3. Outside of a runner-up at Richmond, he’s barely even been in contention. Logano’s Kansas stats are great; his three career wins there rank only behind Hamlin among active drivers, and he was sixth and fifth in last year’s two events in the Sunflower State. But we’re starting to get deep enough in the season for trends to become entrenched. Logano’s overall results in 2024 should mean more to bettors at this point than past stats at any single track, even one that’s been as good to him as Kansas.
Larson Isn’t the Only Hendrick Driver Who Can Win
Larson understandably often dominates the conversation when it comes to Hendrick cars—he leads the point standings and has finished eighth or better in five straight at Kansas dating back to his lone victory there in 2021. But Larson is not the only Hendrick option for sports bettors to consider this week. Chase Elliott also owns a victory there, has just as many top-10s as Larson, and his career average finish of 10.6 in KCK is best among all active drivers. And while William Byron lacks a victory at Kansas, he did finish third in this event last season, and had been top-10 in five straight this year before being caught up in a crash at Dover.
NASCAR Kansas Best Bets
Denny Hamlin to Win (+500)
With Hamlin, you take the consistency when you can find it—and he’s showing it now, both at Kansas (five straight top-fives) and overall this season (three wins in his last seven starts). Hamlin leads all active drivers in green flag passes in Kansas City, where he’s also run 72% of his laps in the top 15 (second only to Martin Truex Jr.). Hamlin also possess a motivation most of his rivals lack—the absence of a NASCAR championship, which is fueling him even this early in the season.
Chase Elliott Top 3 (+320)
As we mentioned earlier, Kansas has historically been a great track for Elliott, whose career average finish there is better than anyone else’s. But we’re more impressed what we’ve seen from Elliott over the past five weeks of this season, when he’s been worse than fifth just once (that at Talladega, which is understandable). The pressure of getting that first victory since his early 2023 snowboarding accident was finally cast off a few weeks ago at Texas (another 1.5-miler, by the way), and we’re once again seeing flashes of the driver who won the title in 2020.
Martin Truex, Jr Top 5 (+110)
Yet again a strong effort turned in a near miss for Truex, who led 69 laps at Dover last week and wound up third. But while he’s still searching for a first win this season, the former series champion remains the picture of consistency. That’s true at Kansas as well, where a crash last fall snapped a streak of eight consecutive finishes of ninth or better in Kansas City. Even with that mishap, Truex has been top-10 in 12 of his 14 Kansas starts dating back to the spring of 2017.
