King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain hosted their cousin, King Olav V of Norway, on his State Visit to Spain on this day in 1984, 40 years ago, following the Spanish State Visit to Norway in 1982.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia received King Olav V of Norway at the Airport in Madrid, where there was a Guard of Honour.

The highlight of the visit was the State Banquet hosted by King Juan Carlos (wearing the Order of St. Olav and the Order of the Golden Fleece), Queen Sofia (in the Fleur-de-Lys Tiara and the Order of St. Olav), and Infanta Elena (in the Prussian Diamond Tiara and the Order of St. Olav) in honour of King Olav (wearing the Order of the Elephant) at the Royal Palace of Madrid.

King Olav also hosted a Return Banquet for King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia (in the Mellerio Shell Tiara), and Infanta Elena (wearing the Prussian Diamond Tiara) at the Prado Palace, also attended by  Infanta Margarita (who wore her Diamond Brooch Tiara).
