DREXEL, N.C. – A Morganton woman died in a single-vehicle crash overnight in Burke County after driving at a high-rate of speed and crashing into several power poles, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

It happened around 3:50 a.m. on NC 114 near Cook Road on Sunday, March 14th.

Authorities said a 2000 Buick Century was traveling north on NC 114 when the driver, 56-year-old Jessie Wilkerson, lost control of her vehicle. She then traveled off the right side of the road and struck two power poles, according to a news release.

Wilkerson was airlifted by a medical helicopter to Mission Hospital in Asheville where she later died.

Wilkerson wasn’t wearing her seatbelt and excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to the investigation.
