Old Mutual Towers Building Catches Fire on New Year Celebrations – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Old Mutual Towers in Nairobi’s Upperhill area on Sunday caught fire, during the New Year celebrations barely hours after the government issued a warning, notifying Kenyans intending to display fireworks to acquire permits.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the building began to showcase fireworks after midnight to usher in the New Year.

However, minutes later smoke engulfed the air and huge flames could be seen from the building.

Following the incident, Old Mutual Towers took to their social platforms to confirm that normalcy had been restored.

“We acknowledge there was a minor incident after the New Year Fireworks celebration at the Old Mutual Tower. This was on the balcony of a top floor and it has since been contained,” the statement read in part.

“We thank all our celebrants for the notifications and we wish you all a Happy 2024.”

The incident comes hours after the government had instructed Kenyans to adhere to the regulations within the Explosives Act during the New Year celebrations.

Through the State Department of Mining, the government noted that those intending to display fireworks should acquire permits.

Further, the Ministry directed that their officers should be notified and be present during any New Year Fireworks celebrations.
