Substitution Options

Here are a few substitution options, if needed, when making mustard with horseradish.

Horseradish – If you don’t have access to fresh horseradish or prepared horseradish, you can use horseradish sauce. It’s not as potent, so you may need to add a bit more to increase the spice factor.

Mustard – If you don’t have dijon mustard, go ahead and use spicy brown mustard in equal parts.

Recipe Notes

  • For a mild mustard horseradish sauce, stick with the prepared horseradish as fresh is twice as spicy.
  • If you’re into beer, try adding a bit to make a beer version.
  • Experiment with different rations of the mustard vs. horseradish.
  • The flavor of the sauce will mellow with time.
  • Store the horseradish mustard in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
