The pandemic isn’t over. Just as it did in 2020 and 2021, Hollywood’s A-list continues to be affected by COVID-19 in 2022 — but they largely attribute their fast recoveries to vaccines.
In January, Late Night With Seth Meyers only returned from holiday break for one show before suddenly having to go on hiatus amid the omicron variant’s prevalence.
“The bad news is, I tested positive for COVID (thanks, 2022!) the good news is, I feel fine (thanks vaccines and booster!),” Seth Meyers wrote via Twitter on January 4. “We are canceling the rest of the shows this week, so tune in next Monday to see what cool location we will try and pass off as a studio!!!”
Meyers’ fellow NBC late night host Jimmy Fallon revealed a day prior that he’d recently recovered from COVID-19. The Saturday Night Live alum made it clear that he tested negative before returning to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 3.
“Hey guys, on the first day of our holiday break I tested positive for Covid,” he captioned a photo via Instagram of himself masked in a room marked “reserved for testing use.” The room was decorated with an iconic Diff’rent Strokes quote, which Fallon appreciated.
He continued, “I was vaccinated and boostered which made me lucky enough to only have mild symptoms. Thank you to the doctors and nurses who work so hard around the clock to get everyone vaxxed. Thank you to NBC for taking the testing protocols so seriously and doing a great job – and also thanks for putting me in the ‘What ‘chu talkin’ about Willis?’ isolation room when they told me the news.”
In the comments section, Fallon told a fan that he completely recovered, writing, “The positive came back on 12/18. Back at work today and feeling 100%!”
The NBC hosts both advocated for vaccination. As of January, the CDC recommended a booster shot for people over age 16 five months after completing the primary series. Meyers and Fallon each had a booster before testing positive.
Similarly, Whoopi Goldberg also had a breakthrough case amid the highly contagious variant’s spread. Her View cohost Joy Behar announced the news on January 3 and said the Sister Act star was expected to be fully recovered within a week.
“Why am I here instead of Whoopi? Well, Whoopi, unfortunately, tested positive over the break, but she’ll be back probably next week,” Behar explained. “Since she’s vaxxed and boosted, her symptoms have been very, very, mild. But we’re being super cautious here at The View.”
The daytime talk show opted to film remotely for the week in the midst of Goldberg’s positive test.
“They say there’s no place like home for the holidays and that’s exactly where we are this year,” Behar said. “Happy New Year from all of our living rooms. As you can see, we’re back in boxes and doing the show remotely — hopefully for just a week. I’m praying that it’s just a week, but you never know because this omicron thing is all over the place.”

The drummer announced in October that he would be postponing six of his upcoming concerts due to illness.
“Ringo is sick and was hoping he could carry on, hence the late decision, but it has affected his voice so tonight’s show, scheduled to begin in a few hours, is canceled,” a statement from the Four Winds Casino in Michigan, where he was set to perform, read via Twitter at the time. “Ringo does not have Covid. While the venue initally said that the former Beatles member “did not have COVID-19,” Starr later tested positive for the virus.
“It has been confirmed today that Ringo has Covid and the tour will be on hold while Ringo recuperates,” the second statement read. “Ringo hopes to resume as soon as possible and is recovering at home. The White House announced on August 16 that the first lady tested positive for the coronavirus while vacationing in South Carolina. “Close contacts of the First Lady have been notified,” her communications director noted in a statement. “She is currently staying at a private residence in South Carolina and will return home after she receives two consecutive negative COVID tests.”

The White House announced on July 21 that the president was “experiencing very mild symptoms” after testing positive for coronavirus.
“He has begun taking Paxlovid,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, noting that he is “fully vaccinated and twice boosted.”
The statement continued: “Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time. He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence.”
The POTUS later tested positive on July 30, several days after he initially tested negative.
“The President has experienced no reemergence of symptoms and continues to feel quite well,” presidential physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor wrote in a statement released by the White House at the time. “This being the case, there is no reason to reinitiate treatment at this time.”

In March, the BTS member tested positive for coronavirus days before the K-pop group was scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards. “After arriving in Las Vegas, he felt a slight discomfort in his throat and promptly took a rapid PCR test and a standard PCT test,” the band’s record label, Big Hit, announced in a statement. “While being under self-quarantine as a proactive measure, the result of both tests came back positive, and Jungkook was confirmed with COVID-19 on Monday.” Big Hit noted that his participation in the performance alongside other members of BTS will be “determined by the local regulations on COVID-19 while we are actively in discussion with the awards organizer.”

On March 23, the country star was forced to cancel his performance for the 2022 CMT Awards after testing positive for the virus. “Unfortunately, Luke Combs won’t be with us tomorrow,” a spokesperson for the awards show told Country Now in a statement. “He is quarantined with COVID. He’s bummed to miss seeing everyone!”

Producers of the Rocketman star’s London play, Cock, announced that he would miss a week of performances after contracting the illness. “Taron Egerton has unfortunately tested positive for COVID. J-Hope is the sixth member of the K-pop super group BTS to test positive for COVID-19. According to a statement from the band’s label, BigHit Music, the singer — who is fully vaccinated — had “no symptoms other than a sore throat” and is quarantining at home while he receives medical treatment. Vice President Kamala Harris‘ office confirmed on March 15 that the second gentleman had contracted the coronavirus. “I tested positive for COVID. My symptoms are mild and I’m grateful to be both vaccinated and boosted,” Emhoff wrote via Twitter. “If you have yet to get vaccinated and boosted, please don’t wait.”
Harris, for her part, tested negative for the coronavirus, but was frequently tested and continued follow safety guidelines.

“Today, just prior to leaving for Mexico, per his physician, @JohnMayer tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unable to perform at the upcoming ‘Playing in the Sand’ event in Riviera Cancun January 7-10,” the band said in an Instagram statement. “In these unprecedented times fans should expect many rare and different tunes.”
While on his own Sob Rock tour the following month, Mayer contracted the virus once again, causing four concerts in New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania to be postponed. “I’m so sorry to make you change your plans,” he wrote via Instagram on February 24.

“Unfortunately I tested positive for COVID and will be missing some days at work until my quarantine is over,” the Talk cohost wrote via Instagram on February 24, noting her absence from the CBS talk show. “I am feeling completely normal now and feel very grateful for that. BTS’ label confirmed on February 15 that the singer, born Kim Taehyung, tested positive for COVID-19 and briefly visited the hospital. “V completed two rounds of COVID-19 vaccinations and is not presenting any extraordinary symptoms other than a mild fever and sore throat. He is currently undergoing treatment at home while waiting for further guidelines from the health care authorities,” Big Hit Music said in a statement posted to Weverse.
