Derek Rosa, a 13-year-old Florida boy who allegedly stabbed his mother to death while she was sleeping, has been charged as an adult.
Rosa was indicted for first-degree murder by a Miami-Dade grand jury, and was ordered to be held on no bond before being sent to the Miami Dade Juvenile Detention Center, reports NBC News.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 in Hialeah. Officers responded to a 911 call that Rosa made himself, and found his 39-year-old mother dead in her bedroom while an unharmed 14-day old baby lay in a crib next to her.
The teenager called 911 and reportedly told operators that he took photos of his mother’s body and shared it with a friend on social media.
In the audio recording, dispatch is heard telling Rosa, “I need to know if your mom is breathing” to which he replied, “Ma’am, she’s dead.”
When asked if he had harmed the baby in the room, he said, “I did not touch her, I didn’t want to touch my sister.” Rosa also shared that his stepfather had two guns, and said he took one and loaded it, intending to kill himself before later changing his mind.
Dispatch also asked why he stabbed his mother, but Rosa’s answer was redacted. “Miss, I took pictures and I told my friend about it, is that bad?” the teen asked at one point.
During his trial, Rosa’s father wrote to the court and described his son as a respectful honor roll student and a good kid who was well loved by his friends. He said he didn’t know what led to the stabbing incident.
Rosa’s arraignment is set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. If convicted, the teen faces life in prison as juveniles are not eligible for the death penalty.
