Chris Rock to perform live stand-up special on Netflix in 2023

He knows all about the dangers of live TV.

Chris Rock, who was slapped onstage at the Academy Awards earlier this year, will host a live stand-up show on Netflix in 2023 that will be streamed worldwide.

The comedy show will be Netflix’s first live streaming event and Rock’s second stand-up performance for the multimedia giant.

“This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch,” Netflix comedy executive Robbie Praw said in a statement announcing the special.

Netflix revealed earlier this year that it wanted to experiment with live streaming events. The company put on the in-person Netflix Is A Joke Fest in Los Angeles in April and May — and Dave Chappelle was tackled while on stage.

Rock, 57, has been on his Ego Death world tour since shortly after Will Smith slapped him lives onstage at the Oscars in March. The comedian didn’t speak much on the slap at his first shows after the Oscars, instead mostly sticking with the material he had planned for months.

Ego Death tour dates are scheduled into December, including multiple shows with Chappelle. Netflix said only that the live special would air in “early 2023.”

Rock’s first stand-up special with Netflix was the pre-recorded “Chris Rock: Tambourine,” which was released in 2018.
