Sustainability is a hot topic, with the environmental movement gaining momentum. We are all about living green and making a difference for the planet. There are multiple ways to be more sustainable. From choosing energy-efficient light bulbs to replacing your old carpet with a new one made from recycled materials, these 8 easy changes can help you do just that.

Ways To Be More Sustainable

1. Choose environmentally-friendly materials

The first step to being more sustainable is to choose environmentally-friendly materials. It is important to make sure that you are using materials that are non-toxic, recyclable, and biodegradable. This will ensure that your home is a safe haven for all of the creatures that live there.

It is also essential to make sure that the materials you are using are natural, which will help not only keep your home healthy but also help the environment. Next, you should consider recycling your old materials. This is a great way to reuse old materials and make new ones out of them. You can also create new furniture from old materials. It is important to consider the materials that you are using in order to make sure that they are as sustainable as possible.

2. Recycle your old carpet

With more and more people switching over to hardwood and laminate floors. Not only does it have a better resell value and is easier on the eyes, but it’s also easy to clean and requires less upkeep. If you’ve torn up your old carpet and need to get rid of it, you could either donate it to a local charity, sell it online, or recycle it. Either way, your carpet will go on to be used for something new.

3. Use LED light bulbs

One of the easiest ways to be more sustainable at home is to use LED light bulbs. These bulbs are a lot more energy efficient than regular light bulbs and they are also much more durable. They also last a long time, which means you won’t have to worry about replacing them as often. LED light bulbs will also save you a lot of money in the long run. They are also much more environmentally friendly than regular light bulbs, which is why they are a great option. You can get LED bulbs anywhere nowadays but these are the ones that I use, and I don’t remember the last time I had to change a bulb.

4. Save on energy

The most important way to be more sustainable at home is to change your perspective on the world. Take a step away from the screen and really take in your surroundings. You can also try to start small by doing things like turning off the lights when you leave a room, turning off the computer, and unplugging the TV when it’s not in use. It may feel like a lot of work at first, but it’ll pay off in the long run when you have a more sustainable home.

5. Start Composting

Composting is one of the great ways to be more sustainable while honoring the earth. Composting helps produce richer soil and creates less disease for plants. It’s a great way to produce healthy soil and naturally biodegrade any compostable food items in the home. The soil you made for your compost is great for your plants and any veggies you might be growing. You can use any nonbiodegradable bin you like or buy a kit as the one shown, this one here comes with a composting guide for you to use and fits on your countertop. I go more into composting in my How to start a compost article you can read here.

6. Use A Bidet

Bidets have been grabbing more attention in the later years because they’re a more affordable option and reduce the use of toilet paper. It has also been proven to be more hygienic since it rinses you off afterward and you just have to ‘dry off’ instead of wiping yourself clean. This is a great option if you like using wet wipes but don’t want the septic tank issues.

7. Buy a water-saving showerhead

One of the more popular ways to be more sustainable is limiting our shower water usage. I love a good warm shower but using that much water is not good for your skin or the environment. Reducing your shower time helps with water conservation and also saves you a bit of money in the long run. While I don’t always take 3-minute showers using a shower head that saves water lets me know that if I do go a little bit longer the damage isn’t that bad.

8. Use Ecofriendly cleaning products

One of the easiest ways to be more sustainable is to use more eco-friendly products. Look for minimal and recyclable packing when shopping and use more natural-based products. Using eco-friendly cleaning products helps reduce air pollution as well as fight against the depletion of the ozone layer. An added benefit is most sustainable companies offer refills so you don’t have to keep buying a new bottle every time you run out.
