For about a year I was married to the idea of posting self-care post on Sundays to be in line with the self-care Sundays trend, but I promised my readers at least one post a month this year. This Sunday my day didn’t go as planned and instead of waiting until the following Sunday, I decided to write the blog when I had the time. Coming up with this month’s self-care post took some serious thought because I wasn’t sure what else to say about sound and self-care, I felt like I said all that needed to be said in last month’s post. But my regular reader’s know how this process is for me; I’m always challenged but I always get it done. Now that I’m not posting as often, I must say that I’m proud of myself, last year I was able to write these blogs each week regardless of how challenging they were.

Last month I talked about the different ways we can use sound as a form of self-care especially since sound is always around us; even silence has a sound. This month I want encourage us to focus on the different ways to use music when we engage in a variety of self-care activities.

DURING MEDITATION I personally prefer to meditate in silence because sometimes music or talking can be very distracting for me. Meditation is a very personal activity and I think it’s unique to each individual and while there are a variety of ways to mediate and a variety of things to focus on, I’m most comfortable with giving myself what I need personally. But music during meditation can be incredibly relaxing if your’e into that genre. Meditation music is usually instrumental or some form of chanting but I’m sure there are people who can meditate to other genre’s of music, if you haven’t stepped outside the box with your mediation music, I encourage you to try it.

WHEN YOU’RE CLEANING who doesn’t do this? lol and if you haven’t done it you should try it. I believe it’s tradition in some families for people to clean to gospel. My family is Caribbean and we usually clean to old school reggae music. I think cleaning to music can help distract you from the chore and you will probably get more done.

WHEN YOU’RE ALONE (AND IT’S QUIET) unless you prefer the sound of silence, when you have some alone time use it to play some of your favorite music and sing along and/or dance.

WHEN YOU’RE SHOWERING this is probably the norm for a lot of people. I know a few people who sings and dance in the shower and use the shampoo and soap bottles as a microphone. I rarely ever listen to music in the shower because I usually take that time to think and focus.

WHEN YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED OR STRESSED when I feel this way there are usually only a hand full of albums that will help to center my feelings. It usually falls under the R&B or neo soul genre.

DURING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES this can be all outdoor activities and in this instance it will be double self-care. For example, gardening and listening to music, walking/running/hiking and listening to music, laying out/sitting in the park and listening to music; you get the picture.

WHEN GETTING READY/DRESSED this is one of the best times to listen to music especially if you’re getting dressed to go out with your friends. It really sets the mood if you’re going to a club, lounge, or out for drinks. It’s a musical pre-gaming.

So this wasn’t a challenge but more of a list of ideas/suggestions on the variety of ways you can take advantage of music in most situations. Of course the list does not stop here, unless it’s distracting or disturbing you can listen to music in just about any situation. If music is your form of self-care it’s nice knowing it’s easily accessible if you ever need it.
