Everywhere you look these days there are people encouraging you to take better care of yourself if you want to live a happier life. It may seem a bit repetitive and sometimes downright boring, I know, but they all have a very valid point.  If you have got to the stage where you feel you need to take your self-care to the next level then I’m pleased you are here and although making healthier choices can be a challenge, it’s worth it for the benefits to your physical and mental health. Here are five simple habits you can start incorporating right away into your daily routine to help you live a healthier lifestyle and feel your best. Let’s get started.

5 Habits to Adopt for a Healthier Lifestyle

1. Prioritize Sleep

Getting enough sleep is a big one and is crucial for your overall health and well-being. If you can aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and set up a consistent sleep schedule then that is brilliant. It can be difficult when you have a busy life and also if you struggle to fall asleep quickly at night like I do but do your best.

Definitely avoid screens and stimulating activities before bed, and create a relaxing bedtime routine to help you wind down. Taking a warm bath with some luscious bath bombs or listening to some white noise or relaxing music might do the trick.

Please remember if you struggle with sleep on a regular basis and have tried the obvious solutions then you might like to consider talking to a healthcare professional for guidance and support.

2. Make Time for Exercise

Regular exercise is essential for supporting a healthy lifestyle. I personally feel much more tired at bedtime if I have been for a run that day. Aim for at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, like a brisk walk or cycling, most days of the week.

If you have trouble finding time to do exercise, try incorporating it into your daily routine by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, going for a walk during your lunch break, doing squats or lunges while your coffee brews or when you clean your teeth, or doing a quick workout at home before or after work. Remember, any amount of physical activity is better than none at all!

3. Eat a Balanced Diet

This is an absolute must. Eating a balanced diet is crucial for keeping a healthy lifestyle. Just like your car needs the right fuel in it to run properly, you need the right food and drink to function properly. This means tucking into a mixture of foods from all food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Try to limit your intake of processed and high-fat foods, and opt for whole, nutrient-dense foods instead.  If you are struggling for inspiration there are plenty of recipe books on the market to help you.

One of my favourites is the recipe book the fitness guru Joe Wicks brought out last year called Feel Good Food. It’s really easy to follow, packed full of great ideas and at only £8.50 I think it’s well worth it.

When you are cooking your meals it’s also important to pay attention to portion sizes and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Remember, food is fuel for your body, so make sure you’re giving it the nutrients it needs to function at its best.

4. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Management

As well as looking after your physical health, your mental health is also important for overall well-being. Practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques can help to reduce stress and improve your mental health no-end. This can include activities such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few minutes each day to focus on your thoughts and feelings. By taking care of your mental health, you’ll improve your overall quality of life and feel more balanced and centred.

5. Stay Hydrated

Water, water and more water! One of the simplest and most effective habits to adopt for a healthier lifestyle is to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water throughout the day can help to improve so many things like digestion, boost your energy levels, and even help you lose weight. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, and consider carrying a reusable water bottle with you to make it easier to stay hydrated on-the-go. You can also add flavour to your water with, lemon juice, fresh fruit, cucumber or herbs for a refreshing and healthy twist.
