SCOTIA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A handful of high schools in the Capital Region received national recognition for their commitment to inclusivity. Deemed by the Special Olympics of North America as Unified Champion Schools, Scotia-Glenville High School, Broadalbin-Perth High School, Shaker High School, and Lake George Jr./Sr. High School earned national banner recognition, while Amsterdam High School renewed its banner status.
Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools students with and without disabilities to play on the same sports teams and take gym classes together, according to the Special Olympics New York. In turn, students develop leadership skills by leading campaigns and activities for the entire school community.
Scotia-Glenville High School started its journey to become a champion school by launching a unified basketball team. Now offering unified cheerleading, bowling, and gym classes, Principal Peter Bednarek congratulated teachers Katelyn Aker and Ron Ashcraft for being the primary facilitators of the unified sports programs.
“These teachers and coaches have facilitated, but our students have been the leaders,” Bednarek said. “I’m so proud of the group of Scotia-Glenville Tartans who have created a culture of inclusion that allows all our athletes and students to have authentic experiences in competition and learning.”
