The Sacramento Fire Department said three victims are in critical condition. All were on board of the REACH Helicopter.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A helicopter crashed on Highway 50, near Howe Avenue, in Sacramento.
The Sacramento Fire Department said three people, who were on board a REACH helicopter, are in critical condition at the hospital. No bystanders were hurt.
A Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson said there was no patient on board the helicopter, just three crew members.
Sacramento Fire Capt. Justin Sylvia said the three crew members on board were a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic. They had just offloaded a patient at UC Davis and were flying back when the crash happened.
Highway 50 eastbound at 59th Street has reopened one lane since the crash. It’s unknown when it will full reopen.
Drivers are being asked to use alternative routes.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty said about 15 bystanders helped Sacramento fire until more units arrived at the scene. He added that survivors were being treated at local hospitals.
A video on TikTok, from user Vladmallco, appears to show the REACH helicopter as it goes down.
REACH provided the following statement to ABC10 in regard to the crash.
“We are aware of an accident involving a REACH Air Medical helicopter on Highway 50 in Sacramento this evening and are keeping all those impacted in our thoughts and prayers.
We are in the process of determining the details of this situation, as well as the condition of the REACH crew involved, who were all taken to area hospitals. We will continue to provide information as it becomes available. There was no patient on board.
We appreciate the concern and support from our community and will share updates when appropriate.”
