To celebrate 20 years of the Museum of Pop Culture, we’re highlighting 20 of the most notable moments from MoPOP’s history. For our nonprofit museum’s third milestone, we remember our first-ever exhibition.

In July 1996, Strats, Studios and the Seattle Sound launched at the Tacoma Art Museum as a preview of MoPOP’s (then Experience Music Project’s) concept and direction prior to the 2000 grand opening. It featured iconic music memorabilia, interactive electronic drum sets, an opportunity to synthesize sounds through bodily movement, a sampling of hands-on guitars, and the gadgets players use to modify their sounds. Feedback from this exhibition informed our opening-day offerings.
