2 women killed in 7-car pileup in Prince George’s County

Among those hurt in the Lake Arbor crash were a 92-year-old man and a 89-year-old woman, according to Prince George’s County firefighters.

LAKE ARBOR, Md. — Two women were reportedly killed during a pileup involving seven cars along Maryland Route 202 in Lake Arbor on Tuesday, according to Prince George’s County fire officials.

The crash happened on the Largo Road stretch of Northbound MD-202, near its intersection with St. Joseph’s Drive at around 12:40 p.m. The two women who were killed in the crash had been inside the same car, according to the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

On Wednesday, Maryland State Police investigators identified the women killed as Tara Gross, 50 of Camp Springs, and Dandra Byrd, 31, of Riverdale. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Gross was driving a Mercedes-Benz E 300 with Byrd as a passenger.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Honda Accord, driven by Tierra Johnson, 28, of Upper Marlboro, was traveling north on Route 202 when it struck a curb divider at St. Joseph’s Drive and became airborne. Johnson was the sole occupant.

The investigation also indicated that the Accord struck a Toyota Tundra, pushing into a Dodge Grand Caravan before continuing north and striking four other cars, including the Mercedes-Benz. The Accord then overturned and came to rest in a ditch near the intersection. Five people, including Johnson, were transported by ambulance to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center for treatment of injuries. The others were treated at the scene or reported no injuries.

MSP traffic investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and consultation with the Office of the State’s Attorney in Prince George’s County.
