After surviving a searing summer that curbed our wardrobe options to T-shirts and shorts, fall is finally here. That means cooler weather, sure. But more importantly, it means limitless layering potential and a textural changeover. Breezy linens and lightweight cottons trade places with beefier materials like wool, sumptuous cashmere, and burly tweed. We could gab endlessly about all the stylish ways you could embrace the seasonal shift (in fact, we do). One of our favorite chilly season menswear maneuvers, however, has to be the heavyweight blazer.

We’re sure that you’ve already got a few suits in your rotation that are equipped to tackle most weather forecasts, plus or minus eight degrees. But even your most versatile 10-month wool suit requires a Plan B overcoat when things dip further than you expected. We fully endorse that high-level layering and you’d undoubtedly be rewarded with double-takes and daps. However, if you don’t want to go full-blizzard fit, a weighty alternative to your three-season sport coat can carry you through the colder months without having to factor in another garment. Dressing is complicated enough, right? We’re talking sport coats made from Harris tweed or Donegal wool, a double-breasted joint made from heavy corduroy or moleskin—suit jackets made from materials that’ll really keep the heat in.

It’s easy to think that finely tailored tweed is reserved for tenured ivy league profs, but don’t go firing up your pipe just yet. Brands of all stripes are making stylish versions worth copping right now, not just for the prep-inclined. You can sport yours to the office and imbue your boardroom outfits with an extra air of wisdom. On the weekend, throw one over a turtleneck like a swaggy ’70s movie star. Or try tossing a cricket sweater carelessly (but actually very deliberately) over the blazer and lean into that preppy panache. And you can always default to the tried-and-true ensemble of a plain T-shirt and your most dusted pair of jeans a la Anthony Bourdain. However you tackle the wide world of layering in your new jacket this fall, know these dozen all earn an A+ from us.
